A recent study has shown that kids are now consuming about a fourth of their calories from snacks alone! These calories are often in the form of sweets and soft drinks, poor choices to fuel a growing body and brain. This month we thought we would offer you some “parent friendly” ideas for those after school snack attacks our kids have! Healthier snacking helps build the body and mind, so kids will have the energy for soccer practice, dance lessons and homework at the end of a busy day.

 Organic reduced fat milk, chocolate milk, strawberry milk
 Seasonal fresh fruit with yogurt dip
 Cliff bars for kids
 Omega-3 fortified eggs for deviled eggs or hard boiled eggs
 Mini-bagels topped almond or peanut butter and honey
 Grab bag of popcorn, sunflower seeds, pumpkins seeds, peanuts, dried cranberries, cheerios and walnuts
 Mozzarella cheese sticks with a bag of grapes
 Mini-pizzas on English muffin with pizza sauce and mozzarella cheese
 Cinnamon toast with reduced fat margarine on whole grain bread
 “Pumpkin Mousse” made with canned pumpkin and vanilla yogurt
 Healthy whole grain cereals with soy or low fat milk
 Fruit flavored Greek yogurt (double the protein of regular yogurt)

Fueling our kid’s right will help our kids to feel and do their best! Have a great school year!

EarthFare has just launched a Healthy Lunch Challenge. When you sign up, you get a coupon for a FREE lunch tote and then will receive an email every Friday with healthy menu ideas, a shopping list and coupons for healthy lunch items on your shopping list. We want to encourage people to pack healthy lunches for themselves and/or their kids – and make it easier and more affordable to do so. Packing a lunch is one of the easiest ways parents can ensure their kids are getting access to healthy food needed to fuel their brains at school. Its also one of the best ways that we as adults don’t get stuck going to fast food restaurants and vending machines when we become “hangry” at work. To sign up go to www.earthfare.com/healthy

Bringing a lunch from home can be a healthy alternative to fast food or the a la carte school lunch. You may also save money in the process. When packing a lunch, think of the food groups as your guide. For example:

1. Peanut butter mixed with shredded carrots and raisins on whole grain bread served with yogurt, fruit and granola. Serve with water.
2. Hummus wrap with lettuce, tomato and cucumber. Served with baby carrots and sliced apples along with water.

Some rules of thumb to packing lunches:

1. Keep cold foods cold by using blue ice in an insulated bag or freezing a sandwich ahead of time. Keep hot foods hot especially if using animal products.

2. Pack what you can the night before, that way it will come together quickly in the morning. Put items needed for packaging lunches in one place, so lunches will assemble quickly.

Have you ever noticed how many different kinds of supplements are in drug stores? Hundreds of different vitamins, minerals and herbal supplements are sold in our supermarkets and stores. The market is huge for supplements and many are packaged with promising claims of bettering your health and curing your ailments. But consumers must be aware that supplements have loose product regulations and supplement marketing easily manipulates confused consumers. Common supplement claims include: “supports a healthy immune system”, “supports heart and cardiovascular health”, “increases metabolism and energy”, and “supports the effects of exercise”. These claims are often misleading.
One little known fact is that supplements are not regulated like prescription drugs. Their ingredients, safety and effectiveness are not monitored by the FDA. No preliminary tests or research are mandatory before they are sold and the only time the FDA will pull a supplement from the shelf is if it is found to be harmful which may be sometimes after the fact. Not only are supplements poorly regulated but their ingredient labels are unreliable. The labels sometimes don’t contain all ingredients that they market and they may also contain ingredients that are not listed. Supplements may also be contaminated with harmful impurities including pesticides and heavy metals and some listed supplement ingredients may simply be unsafe. ‘Natural’ does not equal safe. Supplements may have side effects and can cause harmful drug interactions. For example, a popular herbal supplement known as St. John’s Wort may interact with numerous prescription drugs such as birth control and antidepressants.
Herbal manufacturers can voluntarily pay to have their products tested by the United States Pharmacopoeia (USP). The USP label verifies that the correct ingredients and amounts are on the label and that there are no harmful containments. It also guarantees that the supplement will breakdown correctly in the body and that the manufacturer has safe and sterile practices.
For most people it is not necessary to take vitamin and mineral supplements if they are eating a balanced diet. If you have concerns about getting enough of your daily nutrient requirement, ask your health care provider. If you need to take a supplement, look for USP verification on the label to ensure the product’s safety and efficacy. If you have questions about supplements, reliable sources for information are your doctor, pharmacist or a registered dietitian.

Hi Everyone!!

The YMCA Y Achievers program had a unique opportunity thanks to a generous gift from Horse Sense of the Carolinas. The Y Achievers program, which provides enrichment and positive confidence building activities (such as the activity you are about to read about) to teens living in Pisgahview and Deaverview communities, was able to travel to Horse Sense of the Carolinas for an afternoon of Equine therapy led by Kendall Smith. The teens had some reservations at first about working with the horses, but quickly learned about positive communication skills and building relationships through nonverbal cues and activities with different horses. The groups still talk about each horse they worked with and the experience they had at Horse Sense. It is through the generous gift of Horse Sense of the Carolinas and the support of members like you that the YMCA is able to make such a powerful impact on these wonderful kids in our community.

Thank you Horse Sense of the Carolinas from the Y Achievers Program!

The extreme heat conditions this summer place us at higher risk for dehydration and heat related illness. The elderly, children and athletes are at particularly high risk.

Heat-related illnesses, such as heat exhaustion and heatstroke, occurs when your body can’t keep itself cool. The two common types of heat related illness are heat stroke, and heat exhaustion. Heat exhaustion happens when your body gets too hot. It can be caused by physical exercise or hot weather. You may experience any or all of the following symptoms:

Heavy sweating

Feeling weak and/or confused

Dizziness

Nausea

Headache

Fast heartbeat

Dark-colored urine, which indicates dehydration

If you think you have heat exhaustion, get out of the heat immediately! Rest in a building that has air-conditioning or find a cool shady tree. Drink plenty of water. Take a cool shower or apply cool water to your skin. If left untreated, heat exhaustion can lead to heat stroke, a life threatening condition.

Symptoms of heat stroke include:

Dizziness and feeling light-headed

High fever (greater than 104)

A flushed or red appearance to the skin

Lack of sweating

Muscle weakness or cramps

Nausea

Vomiting

Fast heartbeat

Fast breathing

Feeling confused, anxious or disoriented

Seizures

Make sure you call 911 and get medical help immediately if you suspect heat stroke

Poor hydration can increase injury risk, hamper concentration and slow recovery for all athletes. The longer and more intense the physical activity, the more important it is that you obtain the right kind and amounts of fluids. Some basic tips nutritionists give to help you stay cool and hydrated during your workout include:
• Carry a fluid bottle with you so you can “pre-hydrate” before and after exercise. For bikers, make sure you have at least 60 oz water on your bike for a 2 hour ride. Runners, make sure you leave water bottles along your running route to re-hydrate or carry a hydration pack with plenty of water.
• Drink at least 2 cups of water or sports drink 1-2 hours before and 1 cup every 15 minutes of intense exercise, especially in the hot weather
• Drink on a schedule. Pre-plan to have plenty of fluids available.
• Increase quality fluids like skim and lowfat milk, almond or soy milk, and 100% fruit juices.
• Eat foods high in fluids such as fresh or canned fruits, yogurt, soups, puddings and watermelon

Stay cool and well hydrated. Don’t forget, fall is right around the corner!

Yours in good health,

Healthy Ways to Manage Stress!

Summertime is supposed to be a time for fun and leisure, but it can also be a time filled with stress. Let’s take a closer look at the problem:

Some of the most recent statistics that have been found about the effects here in the United States are:

According to the latest Stress in America survey conducted annually by the American’s Psychological Association, 75 percent of Americans reported experiencing moderate to high levels of stress in the past month.

Stress is the tension or pressures we feel as a result of daily life challenges such as balancing family obligations and work commitments. Some stress is positive and actually causes on bodies to release stress hormones, which raises the body and brain to meet challenges we have been presented with. However, when stress becomes constant and persist over an extended period of time, stress can cause problems with our health, moods, relationships, and productivity.

When we begin feeling overwhelmed with stress it is important to our quality of life to begin taking control of our stress, here are three things you can do:

1.) Asking ourselves what are my controllable vs. uncontrollable stressors. Below is an activity you can download and print to find out your stressors. Row one, list all of the stressors you encounter on a day to day basis such as waking up late, missing a deadline, etc. Row two, put them in order from 1-10 (10 being the most stressful). Row three, identify which stressors you can eliminate & which you must manage. Then, create an action plan. For questions about this activity, contact Diana Crockett, Woodfin YMCA at dcrockett@ymcawnc.org.

Here is the link to download and print the activity: Activity – Identifying Stressors

2.) The Action plan may include identifying ways to control our stress by, for this example, putting our stressful situation into perspective by recognizing when we are feeling stress, closing our door for five minutes and taking time to read inspirational messages from a book or calendar with inspirational quotes. This allows you to step back from the situation, and when you are ready to go back to the task at hand we will be more productive.

3.) Another thing we can do is find a way to relax at the end of every day. Some examples include taking a mineral bath soak to relieve stress and tension, listen to music for relaxation while enjoying a cup of cozy chamomile herb tea (or any of your favorite teas).

4.) Other things we can do are practice is deep breathing techniques, meditation, being in nature, and exercising (yoga is a great way to focus on meditation and relaxation at the end of the day!)

Have a great week!
